Miami football will be challenged by Michigan State transfers

The Miami football program has been one of the most active in the transfer portal since it was introduced in October 2018. Michigan State lost over 30 players to the transfer portal and added 15 transfers and signed 18 freshmen in their 2021 Class. Several transfers have been a big impact in 2021.

The marquee transfers the Miami football team added three marquee transfers during the 2021 offseason. Defensive end Deandre Johnson and wide receiver Charleston Rambo have yet to make an impact for the Hurricanes. Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson rebounded from an uneven performance against Alabama.

Stevenson recorded nine tackles against Alabama. Against Appalachian State, Stevenson had five tackles, three pass breakups and two punt returns for 27 yards. Rambo has 12 receptions for 85 yards through the first two games. Johnson has only one assisted tackle through the first two games of 2021.

The Spartans transfers have been led by running back Kenneth Walker III who has 30 carries for 321 yards and five touchdowns this season. Walker started the season with 23 carries for 264 yards and four touchdowns against Northwestern. On his first carry for Michigan State, Walker went 75 yards for a TD.

Miami faced former Tennessee linebacker Henry To’o To’o in the season opener against Alabama. On Saturday, the Hurricanes will go against To’o To’o’s former Volunteers teammate Quarvaris Crouch. Crouch has 14 tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack through the first two games this season.

Cornerbacks Chester Kimbrough and Ronald Williams are other former SEC players. Kimbrough transferred to Michigan State from Florida and Williams from Alabama. Kimbrough was on the sideline when the Gators defeated the Hurricanes in the 2019 season opener 24-20 in Orlando. In 2020,

Kimbrough had five tackles in his only appearance of 2021 last week against Youngstown State. Williams has six tackles, one TFL and one sack in 2021. All but one of Williams’ tackles came against Northwestern. Miami will be familiar with DE Drew Jordan who transferred to Michigan State from Duke.

In four career games against Miami for Duke, Jordan has 11 tackles, seven solos, four unassisted and a half TFL. The experienced Miami offensive line should be familiar with how Jordan likes to rush the passer and how to block him against the run. Transfers will play a big role in the Miami Michigan State game on Saturday.
