Jaxson Dart who replaced Miami Hurricanes quarterback Jake Garcia in the USC 2021 signing class shined for the Trojans this weekend. Garcia de-committed from USC shortly after Dart become the third QB committed to the Trojans in the Class of 2022. Miller Moss and Dart wound up signing with USC.
Relieving starting quarterback Kedon Slovis, Dart was 30-46 for 391 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions for USC. Garcia is listed as the co-second team QB for Miami with Tyler Van Dyke behind D’Eriq King. In reality Van Dyke is the likely second-team Miami QB in his second season with the Hurricanes.
Behind Dart, USC rallied from a 14-0 deficit to win 45-14 at Washington State. Garcia and Van Dyke are likely to play on Saturday when Miami hosts Central Connecticut State. King needs to get the Miami Hurricanes off to a good start and big lead early to allow Garcia and Van Dyke significant reps against the Blue Devils.
Dart was the 13th ranked QB in 2021, Moss 15th and Garcia 16th. Dart threw for the most yards in a USC debut in 25 years. Garcia is gaining a lot of momentum from the Miami fanbase. The reality is that King is the Hurricanes QB for the 2021 season unless there is a surprising change or development.
Dart was put into the game ahead of Moss when Slovis was injured against the Cougars. USC Donte Williams said that the Trojans do not have a QB controversy. When Miami added KIng as a transfer from Houston it solidified the QB position. Prior to King, Miami had a QB controversy for the two previous seasons.
Garcia and Van Dyke will have the chance to learn from King this season. After King mentors Garcia and Van Dyke in 2021, they will have a chance to compete next spring and in training camp in August 2022 to be the Miami starting QB. Garcia has recently earned a national following appearing on the Netflix show Titletown.
Garcia, Dart and Moss will be linked throughout their college careers. It will be interesting to see if Dart remains the starter if Moss will transfer after the season. How will the 2022 competition between Garcia and Van Dyke impact their careers? With the transfer portal, QBs are more intertwined than ever.
