The Miami football team will face one of its toughest challenges this season defending the Virginia passing offense and quarterback Brennan Armstrong. Armstrong leads the ACC in passing yards per game, is second with 13 touchdown passes and third in passer rating and completion percentage.

Only Kenny Pickett of Pittsburgh is ahead of Armstrong in the ACC QB rankings published by Brad Crawford of 247 Sports on Tuesday. D’Eriq King of Miami is ranked as the ninth-best QB in the ACC by Crawford. Virginia has four qualified receivers who are averaging over 14 yards per reception.

Virginia has four of the top 19 in the ACC receiving yards per game. Dontayvion Wicks leads the ACC in receiving yards and per game and is third averaging 20.91 yards per reception. Jelani Woods leads ACC TEs averaging 15.44 YPC and 61.8 yards per game. Keytaon Thompson and Re’Shaun Henry are other receivers to watch.

If not for Florida State, the Miami football team would have the worst pass defense in the ACC. The Hurricanes are allowing 245.8 yards per game. That number inflates to 271.3 passing yards allowed per game against FBS opponents. That is 11th in the ACC. Crawford examines how Armstrong ranks in the ACC and nationally.

"2. BRENNAN ARMSTRONG, VIRGINIASeason stats: 120-of-180, 1,705 yards, 13 TDs, 3 INTsThe word: Second only to Fresno State’s Jake Haener in total passing yards this season, Brennan Armstrong is averaging a college football-leading 426 yards per game in Virginia’s wide open passing attack. He would be in the top spot through the first third of the campaign had the Cavaliers not lost back-to-back pivotal games against North Carolina and Wake Forest. Armstrong will continue to fill up the stat sheet this fall as long as Virginia’s defense keeps giving up chunk plays and forces the Cavaliers to play from behind much of the game."

Armstong has been as explosive as he has been efficient this season. The Cavaliers signal-caller is second in the ACC with 31 completions of 10 yards or more and leads the conference with 11 completions of 20 yards or more. Miami has to raise their level of play defending the pass on Thursday night.
