Miami Hurricanes offense should have success versus Virginia
The Miami Hurricanes offense will face a Virginia Cavaliers defense that has allowed 1,172 yards and 96 points in losses to North Carolina and Wake Forest the last two weeks. Miami who has struggled offensively against FBS opponents the first three weeks should have success against Virginia on Thursday night.
In games against FBS opponents, Virginia is 109th in scoring defense allowing 36.7 points per game, 118th in total defense allowing 503 yards per game, 114th against the run allowing 237 yards per game and 67th allowing 221.8 passing yards per game. Miami has not exceeded 25 points against a 2021 FBS opponent.
Converse to the numbers Virginia is allowing, Miami is 118th in scoring offense against FBS opponents averaging 18.3 points per game, 82nd in total offense averaging 360.3 yards per game, 102nd in rushing offense averaging 104.67 yards per game and 101st averaging 271.3 yards per game.
Something has to give as two struggling units match up at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday night. Miami set a school record with 739 total yards in a 69-0 victory over Central Connecticut State on Saturday. The Miami Hurricanes passed for 417 yards and ran for 322. The Blue Devils are an FCS program though.
Miami has to show they can produce offensively against an FBS school. Virginia will likely be the worst FBS defense the Hurricanes play in 2021. Playing in front of their home fans in the ACC opener Miami needs to have a good game offensively. Another sluggish offensive performance will bring out the boos.
Miami is expected to be without first-team quarterback D’Eriq King on Saturday. King suffered an injured shoulder two weeks ago against Michigan State. The Hurricanes second-year signal-caller sat out last week against Central Connecticut State. Freshmen Tyler Van Dyke and Jake Garcia are expected to split the snaps at QB.
The return of running back Jaylan Knighton and a Virginia defense that has been susceptible to allowing big plays is another thing to watch from Miami offensively. Virginia ranks 74th nationally allowing 52 plays of 10 yards or more and 95th allowing 20 plays of 20 yards or more. The Miami offense needs to produce.
