The Miami Hurricanes will play second-year freshman Tyler Van Dyke at quarterback on Thursday night when they host Virginia. Starting QB D’Eriq King and co-second team Jake Garcia with Van Dyke are both out with injuries against the Cavaliers. Van Dyke was 10-11 for 270 yards and three touchdowns in his first start last week.

Miami is missing several players in addition to the QB. Other players Miami is missing this week include defensive tackles Jared Harrison-Hunte and Jordan Miller, center Corey Gaynor, defensive back Al Blades and linebacker Keontra Smith. Miami previously lost running back Don Chaney Jr. and left guard Jalen Rivers for the season.

Van Dyke alternated every two drives against Central Connecticut State last week. In the first playing time of his career, true freshman Garcia was 11-14 for 147 yards two TDs and no interceptions. Van Dyke will have a chance to thrive against a porous Virginia pass defense that ranks 98th nationally versus FBS opponents.

Van Dyke should have the comfort of knowing he is the QB for the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday. King will be available on the sideline to help Van Dyke. At 6’4, 224 pounds, Van Dyke gives Miami a different look than King. King is the prototype dual-threat QB. Van Dyke is the more traditional pocket passer.

On the Miami defensive line, expect Elijah Roberts and five-star 2021 signee Leonard Taylor to receive snaps at defensive tackle with second-teamers Harrison-Hunte and Miller out. Nesta Silvera and Jon Ford remain the expected starters. Gilbert Frierson is likely to start at striker with Carter out.

James Williams, Miami’s second five-star signee in the class of 2021 is expected to start ahead of Gurvan Hall at safety. Jakai Clark is getting his second straight start at center for Miami in place of Gaynor. Jaylan Knighton returns from a four-game suspension on Thursday night to help ease the loss of Chaney for the season.
