Miami football legends Warren Sapp and Luther Campbell working for Lane Kiffin

Miami football legend Warren Sapp and fabled rapper, hip-hop star and Miami Edison head coach Luther Campbell have separately this week voiced their preference for Mississippi head coach Lane Kiffin to be the next Hurricanes head coach. Campbell wrote in the Miami New Times stating Miami needs to fire head coach Manny Diaz.

Sapp posted a video of Kiffin being interviewed by CBS during the Rebels 42-21 loss to Alabama on Saturday. A fan responded saying to Sapp “tell him to come to Miami.” Sapp replied saying “We(‘re) working on it.” Campbell has been campaigning for Kiffin to come to Miami frequently on Twitter recently.

The hot seat for Diaz has increased significantly following the 30-28 loss to Virginia on Thursday night. Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports reported the pressure on Diaz is heating up from prominent alums as well as obviously the fan base. Feldman also reported the administration is likely to support Diaz through the remainder of 2021.

The only thing that could change Diaz’s status for the remainder of the 2021 season according to Feldman is if the Miami players quit on Diaz. The near comeback against Virginia showed grit as stated by Feldman. Fans will have two weeks to debate Diaz’s status before Miami plays at North Carolina on October 16.

Campbell fronted legendary rap group, Two Live Crew and now known as Uncle Luke wrote All About the U for the ESPN 30 for 30 documentaries The U about the Miami football program in the 1980s and early 1990s and the The U Part Two in the early 2000s. Campbell stated Diaz went back on what was stated before being hired.

"“Diaz has failed on every point: That he’d bring in great assistant coaches. That players would run through walls for him. That the team would win championships. It’s been three years, and none of that has been accomplished.He’s even posted a worse record than Al Golden, the former Hurricanes coach who was instrumental in the program’s rapid decline…Everything that made the U great has been torn down.”"

Campbell feels the Miami football program is relying on the transfer portal too much because in his words they cannot compete with “the big boys” in recruiting. Miami signed the 17th ranked recruiting class in 2020 and 11th in 2021 under Diaz. Campbell wants a shakeup that includes Kiffin, Alonzo Highsmith and Gino Torretta.

Highsmith was a running back on the 1983 Miami National Championship team and Torretta is the only Miami quarterback to win a National Championship and the Heisman Trophy. The Hurricanes won the 1991 National Title under Torretta and he won the Heisman Trophy in 1992. Expect the hyperbole to continue throughout 2021.
