Miami Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz announced on the Joe Rose Show on Monday that quarterback D’Eriq King is out for the season after shoulder surgery. King had one of the best seasons by a Miami QB in program history in 2020. Where does King rank among the all-time great Miami QBs?

King would have moved into the top 10 of Miami career passing records with a big season in 2021. Barring a request for a medical redshirt season, King has likely taken his last snap with the Miami Hurricanes. King finishes his Miami career 18th in program history with 3,453 passing yards, and 17th with 26 touchdown passes.

King had 535 yards of total offense against North Carolina State last season which ranks second all-time in Miami history. Stephen Morris holds the Miami record with 568 in 2012 also against the Wolfpack. King threw for 430 against the Wolfpack which is eighth in Miami history and had five touchdowns which is tied for second.

In a 44-41 Miami victory in Raleigh, King added 105 yards rushing in one of the greatest performances in program history. King set the Miami single-season rushing record by a QB in 2020 with 538 and adding four TDs. King was on pace to break the Miami career rushing record by a QB.

Malik Rosier

had 831 rushing yards from 2015-2018. King has 634 rushing yards with Miami. Without the injury, King probably would have passed Rosier in rushing yards with Miami this month. King was only 2,382 passing yards behind

Kyle Wright

for 10th all-time in Miami history. King needed 12 TDs to match Wright for 10th.

Among primary Miami starting QBs, King is fifth all-time in passer rating at 144.1. Vinny Testaverde is first at 152.9, followed by Ken Dorsey at 147.4, Brad Kaaya at 146.2 and Jarren Williams at 144.7. King’s successor Tyler Van Dyke currently had a passer rating of 181.2. We will see how that evolves against ACC competition.

Van Dyke is a more traditional pro-style QB. King is the prototype dual-threat QB. Miami might never have another QB like King. King gave Miami fans multiple thrilling moments in his 1.25 seasons. Four-star 2022 Miami commit Jacurri Brown is a dual-threat QB who will provide the Hurricanes with athleticism and size at QB.
