Miami football 5 high profile coaching candidates not good fits or unlikely hires
Art and Kendal Briles (Arkansas offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach)
Art Briles was the head coach at Houston from 2003-2007 and Baylor from 2008-2015. Briles’ son Kendall is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Arkansas.
Art was the head coach and Kendall on his father’s staff during a sexual assault scandal at Baylor from 2012-2016 that led to Art’s firing.
The hiring of either Briles is saying that winning football games is more important than the integrity of the university. The Miami football program has a history of improprieties in its football program. The Hurricanes received stiff penalties and probation in the 1990s and 2010s that set the program back for many years.
Miami has had enough of challenges winning games on the field. Hiring Art or Kendal Briles as head coach would be an instant backslash. Current Rutgers coach Greg Schiano was nearly hired at Tennessee in 2017. Protests by the Volunteers fanbase regarding Schiano’s hiring caused Tennessee to pull the offer.
Schiano was a defensive assistant at Penn State from 1990-1995 under coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Sandusky is serving life in prison for improper contact with minors. Perception and public image are extremely important in the me-too era. Hiring Art or Kendal Briles would be bad publicity for the Miami football program.
