Miami entered the game the day after Thanksgiving 10-0 and second in the College Football Playoff rankings. Pittsburgh entered the game 4-7 in 2017.

The Panthers upset the Hurricanes in 2017 by holding them to 232 yards of offense in a 24-14 victory. Miami has avenged those losses with wins the last three seasons against Pittsburgh. A win in Heinz Field this season by Miami would be close to the upset Pittsburgh pulled in 2017.
