Miami Hurricanes Tyler Van Dyke 6th QB in 6 years starting versus Florida State

Tyler Van Dyke will be the sixth Miami Hurricanes quarterback to start against Florida State in the last sixth season at Doak Campbell Stadium on Saturday. Brad Kaaya lost his final Miami Florida State game in 2016. Miami has won the last four games against Florida State with four different QBs since 2017.

Malik Rosier rallied Miami to break the Hurricanes’ seven-game losing streak against the Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium in 2017. N’Kosi Perry led Miami to a victory over Florida State in 2018 followed by Jarren Williams in 2019 and D’Eriq King in 2020. Van Dyke can become the fifth straight Miami QB to beat FSU.

Kaaya was 19-32 for 214 yards, two TDs and one interception as the Miami Hurricanes lost 20-19 to Florida State in 2016. Wide receiver Stacy Coley had an 11 yard TD reception from Kaaya with 1:38 remaining, but Florida State blocked the extra point to secure the victory. That was the last Florida State win over Miami.

A year later Miami brought an eight game winning streak to Doak Campbell Stadium dating back to the 2016 season. Rosier was 19-44 for 254 yards, three TDs and one interception. Darrell Langham caught a 23-yard TD pass from Rosier with six seconds remaining to put Miami in front and end the seven game streak to FSU.

The 2018 game between Florida State and Miami was another epic. Miami fell behind 27-7 in the third quarter. Perry was the third different starter against Florida State in as many years. Miami got back in the game after scoring TDs following a strip sack and interception on back to back Florida State possessions.

Perry threw TD passes to Lawrence Cager (his second of the game) and Jeff Thomas to get Miami within 27-21 at the end of the third quarter. A Perry to Brevin Jordan 41 yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter put Miami in front 28-27 and to secure the victory. Perry threw for 204 yards, four TDs and no interceptions.

Miami used big plays and an a defense that produced 16 tackles for loss and nine sacks to defeat Florida State 27-10 in 2019. Former Miami Hurricanes defensive end Greg Rousseau had his breakout game with eight tackles, five TFLs and four 5 as the Miami defense dominated. Williams had two long TD passes.

Williams was 21-37 for 313 yards. two touchdowns and no interceptions. Jeff Thomas and Dee Wiggins had big days at WR with each scoring a TD. Miami won for the second straight time at Doak Campbell Stadium and extended the winning streak over Florida State to four games. Miami held FSU to 203 yards offensively.

Miami dominated Florida State in a 52-10 victory in 2020. The Hurricanes led 38-3 at halftime and set the rivalry record for most points scored. King became the fourth Miami QB in as many years to defeat Florida State. King was 29-40 for 267 yards, two TDs, no interceptions and ran for 65 yards.

Miami ran for 200 yards and four TDs. Perry got in on the fun as the backup to King going 4-7 for 50 yards and one TD. Miami is not likely to have the offensive explosion of points they had in 2020 on Saturday, but the Hurricanes can approach the 500 yards they have last season. Van Dyke gets his turn on Saturday.
