With Miami leading 31-30 in the fourth quarter freshman safety Kamren Kinchens stopped NC State wide receiver Thayer Thomas one yard short of the first down.
Miami took over with 2:49 remaining and Van Dyke and Mallory connected for a first down before the Hurricanes ran out the clock.
Against Pittsburgh, the Hurricanes led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter and 31-17 at halftime.
A late interception from freshman safety James Williams at the Miami two-yard line gave the Hurricanes the ball with 4:07 remaining. Van Dyke and Mallory connected for another key first down before victory formation.
Against Georgia Tech after taking a 14-0 lead, Miami lost three first-half fumbles including one returned for a TD. The Hurricanes later allowed a 98-yard return on a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 33-30 in the fourth quarter. Miami did what it had to after that to secure the victory.
Miami is now 4-3 this season in one-possession games. Too often this season and in recent years, Miami put themselves in a position to win late and then collapsed. Miami has to correct the late-game collapses into wins. Manny Diaz and his staff have a lot to figure out after the loss at Florida State.
