Miami football holds on after fast start defeating Virginia Tech 38-26

After scoring touchdowns on their first four drives, the Miami football team held on for a 38-26 victory over Virginia Tech on Senior Night at Hard Rock Stadium. Miami had 260 yards on its first four drives to take a 28-10 lead in the first half. The Hurricanes had only 46 yards on their first three drives of the second half.

Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in the fifth straight game. Van Dyke has thrown for 1,813 yards, 17 TDs and three interceptions in the last five games. Miami has won four of its last five after starting the season 2-4. Virginia Tech drops to 5-6 with the loss.

Van Dyke continued to make big plays in the passing game all night. Miami had five pass plays of over 30 yards against the Hokies’ 14th ranked pass defense nationally. Van Dyke had a 75 yard TD pass to true freshman Breshard Smith and a 55-yard scoring connection with fifth-year senior Mike Harley in the fourth quarter.

Charleston Rambo led Miami with seven receptions for 116 yards. Rambo is two receptions and 93 yards from setting the Miami single-season records. The Oklahoma transfer also became the fifth Miami receiver to go over 1,000 yards in a season. Will Mallory had the third Miami receiving TD on three receptions.

Miami allowed Virginia Tech to run for 227 yards. The Miami defense was stout in the fourth quarter allowing only 19 yards. The TD pass to Harley was critical as provided the eventual final margin and put Virginia Tech behind two scores. Virginia Tech is not equipped to come from behind with a run-oriented offense.

The Miami football team will finish the season next week at Duke. The Blue Devils are 3-8 after a 62-26 loss to Louisville on Thursday night in Durham. Because of the quirk with COVID schedules in 2020, this will be the third year in a row Miami plays at Duke. Miami defeated Duke 48-0 last season
