Miami basketball wins big over Florida AM

The Miami basketball team earned a 86-59 win over Florida A&M on Sunday night at the Watsco Center. Guard Charlie Moore had a Miami high with 20 points. Moore reached double figures for the second time in four games. Isaiah Wong with 19 and Kameron McGusty who scored 14 also reached double figures for Miami.

The Miami basketball team raced to a 42-21 lead at halftime and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half. The Hurricanes were able to put the Rattlers away early cruising to victory unlike the previous game against Florida Atlantic when they blew a 15 point lead before winning in the final seconds.

Miami improved to 3-1 with the victory. Florida A&M drops to 1-2 with the loss. Miami opened the season with a win over Canisius, lost to Central Florida and have defeated FAU and FAMU. The Rattlers lost by 10 at Kansas State and a victory over Division II LeMoyne-Owen before playing Miami.

Miami built the big first-half lead with Moore scoring 12, McGusty 10 and Wong seven. The Hurricanes shot 51.6 percent from the floor and made five of their 13 three-point attempts. Miami held FAMU to 25.0 percent shooting in the first half. The Rattlers made just two of nine three-point attempts in the first half.

Miami finished the game shooting 50 percent and made 10 of 27 three-point attempts. FAMU shot 35.9 percent from the floor and made just three of their 12 three-point attempts. Moore made five of his seven three-point attempts and Wong 3-6. Sam Waardenburg led Miami with eight rebounds and added four assists.

Miami plays against Dayton next in the ESPN Invitational in Orlando on Thursday at noon. The Flyers have started the season 1-3. Miami will face either Kansas or North Texas on Friday. If Miami wins they will play at 1:00 or 1:30 PM ET on Friday. With a loss the Hurricanes will play at 11:00 AM Friday.

Alabama plays Iona and Belmont plays Drake in the other half of the bracket. After the ESPN Invitational, Miami plays at Penn State in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge. The victory over FAMU was the most complete game Miami has played this season. Miami will need a similar effort against Dayton on Thursday.
