The departure of offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee to become the head coach at SMU is a big blow for the Miami football program. With between 20 and 30 jobs projected to be open by the time the coaching football coaching cycle is complete for 2022, The Miami football program will have several options to replace Lashlee.

The potential replacement for Lashlee will partially depend on what happens with head coach Manny Diaz. Diaz showed the ability to evaluate coaching talent and hire Lashlee two years ago to replace the dismal one-year tenure with former offensive coordinator Dan Enos. Diaz and Miami will have many options.

These names could all fit whether Diaz returns or Miami hires a new head coach. Miami is expected to hire a new athletic director before they determine if Diaz will return for the 2022 season. Miami returns the majority of its offensive skill position players in 2022. Some continuity of spread offense will help.

Miami improved significantly on offense in the two seasons that Lashlee was the Hurricanes offensive coordinator. With the talent Miami returns in 2022, especially quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, Miami will be an attractive destination to become an offensive coordinator. Hiring the right offensive coordinator is critical for 2022.

Miami has the option of hiring up-and-coming offensive coordinators or former head coaches who would help provide another level of leadership for the Miami football team.

If Diaz returns as head coach expect Miami to continue to run the spread. If the Hurricanes hire a new head coach, they will determine the future offensive system.
