Is QB commit Jacurri Brown reconsidering Miami football?
Class of 2022 quarterback Jacurri Brown could be reconsidering the Miami football program following the departure of former Hurricanes offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee. Lashlee accepted the SMU head coaching job on Monday. Several other programs are recruiting Brown heavily.
The Miami coaching staff is in peril. Lashlee leaving brings the Hurricanes offensive system for the future into question. Offensive line coach Garin Justice and wide receivers coach Rob Likens are rumored to be following Lashlee to SMU. Head coach Manny Diaz’s future with the Miami football program is in doubt.
With just over two weeks until Early National Signing Day Brown does not know what system Miami will be running next year or who his position coach will be. If Diaz is retained Miami will hire an offensive coordinator and QB coach who runs a spread. In this era of college football, some variation of the spread is likely.
Miami is still in the process of evaluating potential new athletic directors. The Hurricanes projected top head coach if Diaz is replaced, Mario Cristobal of Oregon, is coaching the Ducks in the Pac 12 Championship Game on Friday night. Any decision with Cristobal will likely have to wait until after Friday night.
"“Miami commit Jacurri Brown is one quarterback that the team at 247Sports is tracking closely. He met with Manny Diaz and other representatives from Miami on Monday night, but has indicated in the past that one of the main reasons why he picked the Hurricanes is because of (Former offensive coordinator Rhett) Lashlee. The latest intel suggests that Brown would like to stick with Miami, but Ole Miss and others have expressed some interest in recent weeks.”"
The above summary came from Andrew Ivins of 247 Sports. Brown is at least a couple of years away from competing for first-team snaps at QB. Tyler Van Dyke returns after a spectacular freshman season. Jake Garcia a 2021 signee will be the projected second-team QB coming off of ankle surgery.
The Miami football program is expected to return Peyton Matocha and former walk-on Ryan Rizk at QB to add depth. A de-commitment from Brown would be a big loss for the 2022 Miami recruiting class. Miami currently has the 57th ranked recruiting class with only eight commits. Losing Brown would drop Miami to 65th.
Brown is the 244th ranked player nationally, the 15th ranked QB and 25th in Georgia in 2022. About a dozen and half other Power Five schools are interested in Brown according to his 247 Sports profile. A QB room of Van Dyke, Garcia and Brown as the top three would be one of the best Miami has had in recent memory.
