The departure of former Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee to SMU has left a big hole on the Hurricanes staff.
Miami has many different directions to go when searching for a new offensive coordinator. One direction could be that the Miami Hurricanes choose to bring in a former head coach to be the new OC.
Whoever the Miami Hurricanes hire to replace Lashlee will depend largely on the job security of head coach Manny Diaz. Several former college football head coaches would be excellent fits to replace Lashlee. A pair of potential candidates coached Miami quarterback D’Eriq King at Houston.
A few factors would go into Miami hiring a former head coach as their new offensive coordinator. If Diaz remains would he want to hire a former head coach with the potential that he is looking over his shoulder? If Miami brings in a stronger head coach like Mario Cristobal or Lane Kiffin they would bring in their own offensive coordinator.
Cristobal and Kiffin are experienced head coaches in the middle of their careers. Cristobal is in his 11th year as a head coach overall and fifth at Oregon.
Kiffin is in his 10th season overall and second at Mississippi. Working with Cristobal or Kiffin would be enticing for any collegiate coach. Cristobal, Kiffin and one of the potential offensive coordinator candidates with head coaching experience have all spent time on the Alabama staff under Nick Saban.
The other three candidates to be discussed are all on the Urban Meyer coaching tree. Their tutelage and experience would make them good hires for Miami.
