Manny Diaz has good chance remaining Miami Hurricanes head coach per report
Matt Zenitz of On3sports reported on Tuesday that Miami Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz has a good chance of remaining in that position. After firing athletic director Blake James last month there have been excessive rumors about the job security for Diaz. The situation could depend on Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal.
Cristobal will coach Oregon in the Pac 12 Championship Game on Friday night against Utah in Las Vegas. Any decision with the Miami Hurricanes going forward with their head football coach will likely wait until at least after the Pac 12 title game on Friday. Miami is reportedly also potentially interested in Mississippi head coach Lane Kiffin.
Zenitz reported that sources told him that the current feel is that there’s a good chance Diaz will keep his job. No explanation was given why Diaz would keep his job. Reports have been that the Miami Board of Trustees is split on who the new athletic director should be and if Diaz will be retained.
Following a 2-4 start to the 2021 season, speculation on the job security for Diaz has been prevalent throughout social and traditional media. Miami officially lost offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee on Monday. Lashlee was hired as the new head coach at SMU and could take several Miami assistants with him.
Offensive line coach Garin Justice and wide receivers coach Rob Likens could be joining Lashlee. Lashlee will not coach Miami in its bowl game. The status for Justice and Likens in the bowl game is unknown. Some speculation has Diaz’s job security hindered by the departure of Lashlee. Miami had a productive offense in 2021.
All the speculation will play out over the next week or so. Miami will likely play their bowl game in the last week of December. A decision on the job status for Diaz would benefit the Hurricanes to have a decision soon to prepare for the bowl opponent. The BOT could decide to give Diaz one more year with a young team returning in 2022.
