Miami Hurricanes QB Tyler Van Dyke well earned ACC Rookie of the Year

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke who did not start until the fourth game of the 2021 season has been named the ACC Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year. Van Dyke earned 48 of the 64 votes for ACC Rookie of the Year and 50 of the 64 votes for ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Clemson running back Will Shipley had 12 votes, Tigers safety Andrew Mukuba and Syracuse cornerback Duce Chestnut earned two votes for ACC Rookie of the Year. Offensive Rookie of the Year. Shipley had 13 votes and Virginia Tech RB Malachi Thomas one for ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Van Dyke completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 2,931 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions with 57 rushing yards and another TD. Van Dyke was fourth in the ACC in passing yards per game, second in passer rating, fifth in TD passes and first in yards per pass attempt.

Shipley ran for 678 yards with 10 TDs and was sixth in the ACC in rushing yards per game. Mukuba had 46 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, seven pass breakups and one fumble recovery in also earning the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year. Chestnut had 43 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, three interceptions and eight PBUs.

Van Dyke took over as the Miami Hurricanes starting QB in the fourth game of the season against Central Connecticut State after starter D’Eriq King was lost for the season with a shoulder injury against Michigan State. Van Dyke ended the regular season with six straight games over 300 yards passing and three TDs.

In a record-setting season, Van Dyke is four TDs away from setting the Miami single-season record. Steve Walsh threw 29 in 1988. Miami is 6-3 when Van Dyke starts. The future is bright for the Miami offense with Van Dyke and most of the skill position players returning for the 2022 season.
