Cristobal reportedly offered Miami football job

An initial announcement that Diaz would be fired and Cristobal hired as the Miami football head coach was expected by the end of the weekend (Sunday, December 5). That did not happen. Speculation about where Cristobal was and that he was potentially meeting with his players at Oregon on Sunday night was rampant.

A deadline of Monday morning was speculated. The firing of Diaz was eventually announced by the Miami athletic department on Monday morning.

A few hours later Cristobal was announced as the next Miami head coach. A Tuesday press conference was scheduled for Cristobal to be officially introduced as Miami head coach.

Diaz tweeted on Monday following his firing that he was “disappointed in the University’s decision and manner in which this played out over the last few weeks.” There was a lot of criticism nationally about the way everything played out and Miami waiting to fire Diaz. Miami Hurricanes supporters had a different view.

If Miami had fired Diaz following the Hurricanes final regular-season game some speculation is that Cristobal would have been upset having to discuss an open position with Miami. Cristobal still had to deal with the questions in the Pac 12 postgame. On Tuesday, Cristobal was introduced as the Miami head coach.
