Mario Cristobal ninth highest paid head coach entering 2022

Hiring Mario Cristobal as the head coach of the Miami football team made a statement by the Hurricanes athletic department they were going to start spending with the elite programs to compete on a higher level. According to Brad Crawford of 247 Sports, Cristobal will be the ninth-highest paid head coach in 2022.

Mario Cristobal will reportedly earn $8 million during the 2022 season. As a private school, the University of Miami does not have to release the salaries of its employees. In addition to entering the top 10 of head coaching salaries, Miami is committed to providing Cristobal with the highest-paid assistant coaching pool in the ACC.

No official announcement has been made for any of the head coaches Cristobal will add to the Miami football staff. Offensive line coach Alex Mirabal has been out recruiting for Miami with Cristobal and will join the Hurricanes staff. Oregon interim head coach Bryan McClendon is expected to be the Miami wide receivers coach.

Cristobal has a 62-60 overall record as a head coach but was 35-13 over the last four-plus seasons at Oregon. In less than three weeks as the Miami head coach, Cristobal has already made an impact. The Hurricanes added defensive end Nyjalik Kelly and tight end Jaleel Skinner after Cristobal was hired.

2022 base compensation: $8 million

The latest: Mario Cristobal is reportedly set to earn $8 million next season during his first campaign with the Hurricanes, who paid his buyout at Oregon before signing him to a $80 million long-term deal earlier this month. Cristobal was the big fish for the ACC program who fired Manny Diaz to get him.

Per reports, Cristobal will have the highest assistant coaching pool in the ACC for salary, which means he’ll be able to fill his staff with elite-level options and money not being a factor.

“Championship culture” is what Cristobal is hoping to establish early with the Hurricanes and they’ve made a substantial investment in his services.

Lincoln Riley who was hired by USC a couple of days before Miami made the Cristobal hiring official will be the highest-paid head coach in 2022. The Trojans lured Riley away from USC by beginning his salary at $10 million in 2022. Dabo Swinney of Clemson is the eighth highest paid head coach and tops in the ACC at $8.5 million.

The investment in the coaching pool is just as important as what Cristobal will earn in 2022. Cristobal has an opportunity to pay his staff competitively with what other elite assistant coaches will earn in college football in 2022. Miami will begin hiring the coaching staff over the next few weeks.
