Cornerbacks coach Rod Chance and running backs coach Jim Mastro who worked under Mario Cristobal at Oregon have made other plans for the 2022 season. Cristobal will have to look elsewhere to fill those spots for the Miami football program in 2022. Chance was hired by Colorado as their CBs coach on Friday.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic tweeted on Monday that Mastro has to stay on the West Coast due to family health issues. Chance is a South Florida native who seemed to be a perfect fit for the Miami coaching staff. A St. Thomas Aquinas alum, Chance coached the CBs for the last two years at Oregon.

Prior to taking the position on the Oregon staff under Cristobal, Chance had his first job as a Power Five position coach with Minnesota in 2019. Chance was a Defensive Analyst for the Oregon Secondary in 2018. The collegiate coaching career for Chance began as the CBs coach at his alma mater Rhode Island in 2012.

Mastro began his career as the RBs coach at Cal Poly in 1989. The career for Mastro began as the RBh Mastro first worked at a Power Five school in 2011 as the Run-Game Coordinator and tight end and slot receivers coach at UCLA. Mastro was the Washington State RB coach from 2012-17. Mastro coached Oregon since 2018.

Cristobal has to pivot to fill the CBs and RBs coaches. Mastro was reportedly taking the Miami before Feldman broke the news on Monday that he has to take the year off. There is no indication who Cristobal will consider with Mastro opting out for the 2022 season. Cristobal could choose to retain current CBs coach DeMarcus Van Dyke.
