Miami football has more recent national championship than these six blue bloods
The National Championship won by Georgia on Monday eliminated a blue blood college football program that had gone longer winning a national championship than the Miami football program.
Georgia won its first title since 1980 when they defeated Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. The Miami football program still has company in their title drought. It has been well documented that Miami last won a national championship in 2001.
A half dozen college football programs that would be considered blue bloods have longer title droughts than Miami. Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State and Tennessee currently have longer title droughts than Miami.
The history of the Miami football dynasty was significantly intertwined with Nebraska, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Penn State. The Hurricanes defeated Nebraska in the 1984 Orange Bowl to win its first National Championship. Miami also earned titles over Nebraska following bowl game wins during the 1991 and 2001 seasons.
The Hurricanes defeated Nebraska in the 1992 Orange Bowl and 2002 Rose Bowl. Nebraska won its first National Championship under Tom Osborne after defeating Miami in the 1995 Orange Bowl. The Miami football program asserted itself as a national power by defeating Oklahoma during the 1985, ’86 and ’87 seasons.
Oklahoma rebounded from the 1985 loss to Miami in Norman to defeat Penn State in the National Championship Game in the Orange Bowl. The following year, the Hurricanes springboarded themselves into an undefeated regular season after beating Oklahoma.
Penn State upset Miami for the National title in the Fiesta Bowl. That remains the last National Championship that Penn State has won. Miami completed the three year defacto round-robin between themselves, Oklahoma and Penn State with a victory over the Sooners in the 1988 Orange Bowl.
That was the only national championship Miami won under Jimmy Johnson.
