After winning the National Championship in 1985, Oklahoma had to wait 15 years to claim another title in the 2001 Orange Bowl over Florida State. That remains the last national championship for Oklahoma despite two appearances in the BCS National Championship Game since then.

Miami missed out on a spot in the National Championship game in 2000 by 0.32 in the BCS. That motivated Miami for the 2001 season. Miami finished the regular season 11-0 and earned a berth opposite Nebraska in the 2002 Rose Bowl for the National Championship. The Hurricanes crushed the Cornhuskers 37-14.

In a game that was not as close as the final score, it would be the last appearance on the national stage for Nebraska. Michigan and Nebraska each won their last national championships in 1997, sharing the title. The Wolverines made their inaugural appearance in the College Football Playoff this season with a 34-11 loss to Georgia.

Notre Dame has not won a National Championship since 1988. The Fighting Irish were crushed by Alabama 42-14 in the 2012 BCS Title Game at now Hard Rock Stadium. Notre Dame lost 30-3 to Clemson in the playoff following the 2018 season and 31-14 to Alabama in the playoff following the 2020 season.
