As he continues the process of hiring his first staff at Miami, head coach Mario Cristobal has a proven track record of coordinators he has hired at Florida International and Oregon becoming head coaches elsewhere. Cristobal has proven he has can identify coaching talent and hire them for his staffs.

Mario Cristobal has brought offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, defensive line coach Joe Salave’a and wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon with him from Oregon to Miami. Cristobal also hired Kevin Smith as the running backs coach from Mississippi.

Building a staff full of coaches who can develop the players and recruit is critical for any staff. Mario Cristobal has stated the importance of finding coaches who can develop as well as recruit. Miami is taking a methodical approach to filling out their roster. Some reports are Cristobal could be interested in NFL assistants.

At FIU Cristobal had future college head coaches Geoff Collins and Scott Satterfield and Power Five, coordinators James Coley and Todd Orlando on his staff. From 2013 through 2015 Coley was the Miami offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Coley has been the TE coach at Texas A&M since 2020.

There has been some information that Cristobal could be interested in bringing Coley back to Miami. Coley reportedly would only return as a play-caller. Miami has not hired a TEs coach. Stephen Field who was the TE coach on the previous Miami staff is still with the Hurricanes.

Collins is currently the head coach at Georgia Tech. Cristobal and Collins will be reunited every year in the ACC Coastal as long as both coaches remain at their current schools. Satterfield is currently the head coach at Louisville. Cristobal also had assistants from his Oregon staff move on to head coaching jobs.

Andy Avalos was the inside linebackers coach and defensive coordinator for Oregon in 2019 and 2020. When Bryan Harsin left Boise State for Auburn, the Broncos hired alum Avalos as their head coach. Boise State went 7-5 in their first season under Avalos. Marcus Arroyo was the Oregon offensive coordinator from 2017-2019.

Arroyo left Oregon to become the head coach at UNLV for the 2020 season. In two years with UNLV, Arroyo is 2-16. Arroyo has spent the majority of his coaching career on the West Coast after playing QB at San Jose State from 1998-2002. Rebuilding UNLV is an extremely difficult task. UNLV last had a winning season in 2013.

Orlando was recently hired to be the defensive coordinator at FAU after holding the same position the last two seasons at USC. Based on his past history, Cristobal will take the time necessary to hire who he feels is the best fit for the Miami coaching staff. His past history has shown Cristobal should be trusted to make the right hires.
