The Miami football program will enter spring practice led by quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. Van Dyke will be on the shortlist of preseason 2022 Heisman Trophy candidates. Brad Crawford of 247 Sports named Van Dyke as one of “College football: 10 quarterbacks to watch in spring practice 2022.”

Miami returns most of their skill positions players on offense in 2022. The Hurricanes lost starting offensive linemen, Navaughn Donaldson and Jarrid Williams. Over the weekend Miami added running back Henry Parrish and wide receiver Frank Ladson to make up for losses at those positions and add depth and experience.

Tyler Van Dyke is in excellent company with the majority of the other nine QBs transfers. D.J. Uiagalelei of Clemson, C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young of Alabama are the only other QBs in the 247 Sports list of 10 to watch who are returning to the teams they played for in 2021.

Bo Nix transferred from Auburn to Oregon, Max Johnson from LSU to Texas A&M, Quinn Ewers from Ohio State to Texas and Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma to Ohio State. Jaxson Dart of USC and Caleb Williams from Oklahoma are still in the transfer portal and named as two QBs to watch by 247 Sports.

"TYLER VAN DYKE, MIAMI HURRICANES2021 statistics: 202 of 324, 2,931 yards, 25 TDs, 6 INTs“Why you need to watch in 2022: Returning quarterbacks at Wake Forest, NC State and Virginia are going to get more preseason love in the ACC, but Tyler Van Dyke’s ascension into that elite tier as the season progressed last fall is worthy of merit.New Miami coach Mario Cristobal said in December that his return to the Hurricanes is a shot in the arm toward the program’s ACC Coastal hopes next season in a wide open division.”"

The QBs Crawford referenced are Sam Hartman at Wake Forest, Devin Leary at North Carolina State and Brennan Armstrong at Virginia. Miami didn’t play the Demon Deacons in 2021. The Hurricanes were a hit upright away from defeating Virginia and beat North Carolina State 31-30.

Miami only plays at Virginia in 2022 with a date that is expected to be announced later this month. Van Dyke made his first ACC start against Virginia in 2020. In a 30-28 loss, Van Dyke was 15-29 for 203 yards passing, one touchdown and no interceptions and added a scintillating 24 yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Armstrong had 268 yards, one TD and one interception in leading Virginia to the 30-28 victory. Three weeks later and after one bye, Van Dyke earned his first ACC victory over North Carolina State. Van Dyke was 25-33 for 325 yards, four TDs and no interceptions against the Wolfpack.

That began the well-known stretch by Van Dyke to end the season with six straight games with 300 yards passing and three TDs. Only 2019 Heisman Trophy winner and National Champion Joe Burrow has accomplished those numbers in the College Football Playoff era. It will be interesting to see the 2022 preseason All-ACC QB.
