bThe Miami football program continued to add depth on its defensive line this offseason with the addition of UAB transfer Antonio Moultrie. Moultrie was a productive player for UAB. In four seasons, the Pensacola, Florida prospect has 116 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception and three pass breakups.

Moultrie has one season of eligibility remaining and should challenge to be a starter for Miami on the DL.  Moultrie finished 2021 with 62 tackles, eight TFLs, two sacks and the lone forced fumble of his career. Moultrie was named second-team All-Conference USA in 2020 and honorable mention in 2021.

Moultrie reportedly chose Miami over Florida, Florida State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech. Miami previously added versabtile DL Jacob Lichtenstein from USC. Miami also has signed incoming freshmen edge rushers Nyjalik Kelly and Cyrus Moss in the Class of 2022. Miami has significantly improved depth on the DL.

The move by Moultrie to Coral Gables will bring him closer to his brother Antarrius who is a redshirt sophomore linebacker for Florida Atlantic. Moultrie has significantly exceeded his recruiting ranking out of high school. When he signed with UAB, Moultrie was a two-star player.

According to his 247 Sports profile, it appears that Southern Mississippi was the only other program to offer Moultrie a scholarship when he signed with UAB in the Class of 2017. Moultrie didn’t receive significant playing time until his redshirt sophomore season in 2019 when he had 19 tackles, 1.5 TFLs and one pass breakup.

Miami returns Jahfari Harvey and Chantz Williams as their most experienced edge rushers. Jared Harrison Hunte and Leonard Taylor project as the starting defensive tackles for the 2022 Miami football team. Lichtenstein and Moultrie are both versatile DL who can play end or tackle. That will help new DL coach Joe Salave’a.

Miami is still strongly pursuing five-star DE Shemar Stewart. Moultrie is a key addition for Miami to add depth and experience to the DL. Miami needs more production from its DL in 2022 after regressing in 2021. The Hurricanes had elite DL play in 2019 and 2020 from All-Americans Greg Rousseau and Jaelan Phillips.
