Charlie Moore hit a shot from just beyond half court and the Miami basketball team got a needed 78-75 road victory at Virginia Tech on Wednesday night. Moore finished with 13 points as all five Miami starters finished in double figures. Kameron McGusty led Miami with 19 points and six rebounds.
The shot by Moore capped off an 8-0 run by the Miami basketball team over the final 2:24. After Virginia Tech extended their lead to 75-70 a Jordan Miller layup with 1:57 remaining cut the score to 75-72. Miller missed the subsequent free throw after getting fouled. Miami got a stop on the next defensive possession.
Isaiah Wong was fouled on a three-point attempt on the next Miami offensive possession and made all three free throws to tie the game at 75. Virginia Tech missed shots on their next two offensive possession. McGusty was called for an offensive foul in between the two empty Virginia Tech possessions.
That set up the heroics by Moore. Moore also finished the night with six assists, two rebounds and five steals in the victory. Miller finished with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Miller scored 14 in the first half as Miami took a 36-31 lead at halftime. Sam Waardenburg and Wong both scored 12 for Miami.
Miami improves to 15-5 overall and 7-2 in the ACC with the victory. The Hurricanes temporarily have a half-game lead on Florida State. FSU was playing at Georgia Tech immediately after Miami won at Virginia Tech. Keve Aluma led four Hokies in double figures with 14 points. Mutts had nine points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Miami took control of the game in the first half with an 18-4 run to seize a 21-9 lead. Virginia Tech chipped away at the lead in the first half twice cutting it to two. Miami was able to hold the lead and go into the half up 36-31. Virginia Tech led by as many as six in the second half before the final 8-0 run by Miami.
The Hurricanes will play at Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets entered their game on Wednesday, 8-10 overall and 1-6 and in last in the ACC. Miami returns home Wednesday to host Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish entered their Wednesday game against North Carolina State 12-6 overall and 5-2 in fourth place in the ACC.
