Tyler Van Dyke was named the fifth best returning quarterback in college football in 2022 by 247 Sports. Van Dyke had a breakout season for Miami in 2021. Van Dyke is one of three ACC QBs on the list. Brennan Armstrong of Virginia is ranked seventh and Sam Hartman of Wake Forest is one spot ahead of Van Dyke in fourth.

Armstrong led the ACC in passing in 2021 averaging 404.5 yards per game, Hartman was second averaging 332.2 YPG and Van Dyke was fourth at 293.1. ACC Player of the Year Kenny Pickett who completed his eligibility finished second at 332.2 YPG. Miami lost to Virginia, beat Pittsburgh and did not play Wake Forest in 2021.

Miami will play at Virginia in 2022 and host Pittsburgh. The Hurricanes do not play Wake Forest unless both teams make the ACC Championship game. Van Dyke returning could make Miami the favorite to win the ACC Coastal. Miami and Virginia both have new coaches entering the 2022 season.

Miami hired Mario Cristobal from Oregon. Virginia hired former Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott to replace Bronco Mendenhall. Miami will likely compete with North Carolina as the 2022 preseason favorite. Van Dyke won the 2021 ACC Offensive Freshman of the Year and Freshman of the Year.

"5. TYLER VAN DYKE – MIAMI2021 stats: 2,931 yards, 25 TD, 6 INT, 62.3% completion percentageVan Dyke filled in for the injured D’Eriq King and found immediate success for Miami. While new head coach Mario Cristobal has yet to find his coordinators, Van Dyke should thrive under Cristobal’s leadership in 2022. He could fight to be the top quarterback in the ACC and put the Hurricanes in conference title contention.Van Dyke had quite the command of the offense last season and that should continue well into 2022."

Van Dyke was exceptional for Miami in the final six games of the season. With the Hurricanes winning five of those games, Van Dyke had 2,194 yards passing, 20 touchdowns and three interceptions. Van Dyke threw for 300 yards and six TDs in each game. Only Joe Burrow has done that in the College Football Playoff era.

If Van Dyke can continue the momentum he built in the last half of the 2022 season, Miami will be a major contender to win the ACC Coastal Divison and potentially a conference championship. The game against Virginia in 2022 could determine the best QB in the ACC Coastal. If Miami wins, Van Dyke could be ACC Player of the Year.
