Miami football 2022 National Signing Day Winner
The Miami football program was named one of six programs nationally that were a winner on National Signing Day by Andrew Ivins of 247 Sports. Miami vaulted from 38th entering National Signing Day to 15th after adding four players. The Hurricanes pulled off a surprise signing four-star running back Trevonte’ Citizen.
Miami signed Citizen over Florida who held most of the projections for the Louisiana prospect entering National Signing Day. The Hurricanes also have the seventh-highest ranked class in average ranking per player. In less than two months Mario Cristobal has made a major impact in recruiting with the Miami football program.
Eight of the 14 Miami signees in the Class of 2022 can be attributed to Cristobal. Miami was able to sign those players because Cristobal arrived in Coral Gables. Signing a top 15 class during a transition year with a new coaching staff was remarkable for Cristobal. He has not hired a full staff yet.
Miami signed 10 blue-chip players in the class of 2022. The Hurricanes missed out on a five-star signee, but with a full year to recruit in the 2023 Class that will likely change a year from now. Oregon signed the sixth-ranked class nationally in 2021 in the last full class under Cristobal.
"WINNER: MIAMI HURRICANESWhen Mario Cristobal was tabbed as Manny Diaz’s replacement, Miami’s recruiting class ranked in the 70s. Cristobal will go to sleep on Wednesday night with a class that ranks ahead of both Miami and Florida.Sure, the Hurricanes lost the Shemar Stewart sweepstakes, but they pulled off a bit of a shocker by landing Top247 running back TreVonte’ Citizen. The folks in Coral Gables also seem to be very high on three-star offensive lineman Matthew McCoy, three-star defensive lineman Ahmad Moten and three-star offensive lineman Anez Cooper. All three at one time looked like they might be headed elsewhere, but elected to team up with Cristobal."
Cristobal was an elite recruiter at Oregon. With the best-recruiting base in the country within an hour’s drive from Coral Gables, Cristobal should contend annually to sign top 10 classes. Only Mark Richt is the only head coach Miami has hired in its history with a resume of recruiting as Cristobal has.
Miami might not be finished adding talent. The transfer portal will likely evolve throughout the offseason. Cristobal mentioned that Miami needs to upgrade their talent at linebacker during his National Signing Day press conference on Wednesday. Miami served notice they will compete nationally in recruiting under Cristobal.
