The Miami football program signing four-star running back Trevonte’ Citizen from Lake Charles, Louisiana was one of the biggest surprises of National Signing Day on Wednesday. Citizen chose Miami with most of the projections saying he would sign with Florida. Rivals.Com the Shock Value Award.

Citizen is the only RB the Miami football program has signed in the Class of 2022. Henry Parrish transferred to Miami from Mississippi giving the Hurricanes another RB addition to the roster. Miami now has six scholarship RBs entering the 2022 season. Jaylan Knighton returns as the starter at RB.

Citizen was the second surprise player Miami has signed in the 2022 class. Miami flipped tight end, Jaleel Skinner, from Alabama during the Early National Signing Period in December. Mario Cristobal and his staff have quickly made a statement that they can recruit against the best programs nationally and win.

Miami got the last visit for Citizen and that seemed to make the difference. Signing Citizen helped vault the 2022 Miami class from 38th entering National Signing Day on Wednesday to 15th currently. With Mario Cristobal as the head coach, highly ranked recruiting classes should become de rigueur.

"SHOCK VALUE AWARDTreVonte’ Citizen was supposed to go to LSU. Or Florida. Or Auburn. Those were the three programs most discussed when it came to the four-star running back from Lake Charles (La.) Lake Charles College Prep. He visited Miami recently and by all accounts had a good time but in the final days this looked like an LSU-Florida battle.Instead, Citizen picked the Hurricanes and not only gave first-year coach Mario Cristobal a huge statement win but gave the Hurricanes a tough, physical running back to add to their arsenal."

Citizen and Skinner signing with Miami over programs that have had more recent success makes a statement for Cristobal. Miami adds Citizen to 2021 signees Cody Brown and Thad Franklin as bigger RBs on the Miami roster. Cristobal mentioned in his National Signing Day press conference Citizen as versatility.

Cristobal said that Citizen is an “Every down back…He can run through you, can run around you. He can get the ball out of the backfield and line up outside as a receiver. Explosive power. Hard to tackle guy…This guy does it all.” That versatility could give Citizen a chance for snaps as a true freshman in 2022.
