Late run lifts Miami basketball over Georgia Tech

The Miami basketball team used a 16-5 run late in the second half to seize the lead and earn a much-needed 79-70 victory over Georgia Tech. Miami sweeps the season series after winning in Atlanta last month. All five Miami starters finished in double figures led by Sam Waardenburg with 19 points.

As they often did early in their ACC schedule, the Miami basketball team dug themselves a big deficit in the first half and had to rally. After Miami led 8-2, Georgia Tech responded and eventually took 32-18 lead with 5:56 remaining in the first half on a Michael Devoe three-point shot. Miami rallied with a 14-2 run.

The Hurricanes would trail 36-34 at halftime. Georgia Tech and Miami was never more than a two-possession game throughout the second half before the Hurricanes seized control with its late run. Miami had the advantage by making 20 out of 26 from the free-throw line. Georgia Tech was 11 of 14 from the line.

Waardenburg also contributed eight rebounds to tie for the team-high with Anthony Walker. Walker started on his birthday and scored 12 in place of Jordan Miller who is day to day with a right leg injury. Kameron McGusty scored all 17 of his points in the second half. Isaiah Wong scored 14 and Charlie Moore 13 for Miami.

Georgia Tech was led by Devoe with 20 points. Miami moved the ball well with 19 assists on 27 made baskets. With Miller out and Moore in foul trouble, freshman

scored four points, had six rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes. Wong even played time at the four on Wednesday.

Miami improves to 17-7 overall and 9-4 in the ACC with the victory. The Hurricanes are one game behind Notre Dame who leads the ACC with a 10-3 record and are 17-7 overall. Miami is tied with North Carolina for the critical fourth spot and a double-bye into the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. Miami owns the tiebreaker over UNC.

The Hurricanes travel to Wake Forest on Saturday for a key game that will impact the top of the ACC Standings. Wake Forest is 20-5 overall, 10-4 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons won 69-51 at North Carolina State on Saturday. Miami defeated Wake Forest 92-84 in Coral Gables last month.
