The hiring of Josh Gattis as offensive coordinator earlier this week has the Miami football program as a serious contender for 2023 five-star quarterback Dante Moore according to Rivals.Com. Adam Gorney, the National Recruiting Director for Rivals and Brandon Justice of MaizeandBrew.Com, discussed Moore.
The statement “The in-state schools are slipping a little for Dante Moore after Josh Gattis’ departure from Michigan and Bo Edmundson’s commitment to Michigan State” was posed for Gorney and Justice to discuss. Moore is likely to consider Michigan as the 12th highest-ranked prospect in the state from Detroit in 2023.
Rivals also ranks Moore as the 12th ranked player nationally in 2023 and its third pro-style QB. Gattis and new Miami QB coach Frank Ponce have a proven history of developing QBs. Beating out Michigan will be difficult, but the Miami football program should be able to emerge as a contender for Moore in the next 10 months.
The Rivals.Com Future Cast lists Michigan at 100 percent for gaining an eventual commitment. Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Penn State are listed as the leaders for Moore according to 247 Sports. Gorney and Justice have different opinions on the impact for Moore with Gattis being hired by Miami.
"“Gorney: I absolutely would not discount Miami as a very serious contender now because Moore really likes Gattis and things are trending dramatically up for the Hurricanes on the recruiting trail.”Justice: “The new Miami OC’s departure from Ann Arbor is significant in that he went to a school competing for Moore’s services, however, Gattis’ presence wasn’t a deal-winner and his absence isn’t a deal-breaker for the Wolverines in the race for Moore.”"
Moore unofficially visited Miami while in town for the seven-on-seven Battle Miami Tournament in January. The visit by Moore was on January 21, about two weeks before Gattis was hired. Miami has a deep QB unit but could lose Tyler Van Dyke following the 2022 season. Behind Van Dyke are Jake Garcia and Jacurri Brown.
Miami needs to sign a QB in the Class of 2023 to continue building depth at the position. If Van Dyke leaves, Brown, Garcia and any potential 2023 signee would compete to become the Hurricanes 2023 starter. Gattis has proven himself as an elite recruiter and with Ponce should help Miami contend for elite QBs.
