The 122 Superbowl appearances by Miami football alums are tied for first all-time with Michigan. That number is considerably impressive since Miami has not had alums play in recent Superbowls. Putting together a defense of Miami alums from their success in the Superbowl would virtually earn titles.

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Walt Corey in Superbowl I was the first Miami alum to appear in what would become the NFL Title Game. Running back Ottis Anderson was the first Miami Hurricanes alum to win a Superbowl MVP. Anderson won Superbowl XXV MVP. Ray Lewis is the other Miami alum with a SB MVP.

From the first Superbowl in 1967 through 2020, the Miami football program had a representative in 47 Superbowls. Other than Lewis, the focus on Miami Hurricanes Superbowl heroes have often focused on the offense. Several former Hurricanes have had outstanding games in the Superbowl on defense in addition to Lewis.

Gary Dunn was a champion in Superbowls XVII and XIV with the Pittsburgh Steelers. IN 1993, Dunn was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame following his father Eddie. Several Miami Hall of Fame inductees have played in Superbowls. The number of Miami alums in the Superbowl increased in the eighties.

Howard Schnellenberger made the Miami football program relevant and Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson continued the championship tradition with four titles between 1983 and 1991. The talent that came through Coral Gables during that era of Miami football was exceptional.

Most of the Hurricanes alums who appeared in Superbowls excelled. More than Anderson and Lewis with Superbowl MVPs have performed well on the big stage. Miami alums have impacted the outcome of Superbowls. Four Miami alums who played defense appeared in a Superbowl and are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
