Miami Hurricanes defensive backs in the Superbowl

In the Ravens victory in Superbowl XXXV, former Miami cornerback Duane Starks had five tackles, an interception return for a touchdown and two pass breakups. Playing with Lewis, Starks and the Ravens had one of the most dominant performances in Superbowl history. Only a kickoff return TD prevented a Baltimore shutout.

The Giants gained only 152 yards in total offense. Baltimore needed only 252 total yards in their victory. Starks led the NFL with 23 pass breakups during the 2000 season. During the 2000 season, Starks had 49 tackles, six interceptions, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

The other CB position has two candidates to start on the Hurricanes’ all-time Superbowl defense. Ronnie Lippett had five tackles for the Patriots in their Superbowl XX 46-10 loss to the Chicago Bears. Antrel Rolle had six tackles and one quarterback hit in Superbowl appearances with Pittsburgh and the Giants.

It took Ed Reed 10 years in the NFL to earn a Superbowl berth with Baltimore. Reed had six tackles, an interception and a pass breakup as Baltimore defeated San Francisco 34-31 in the Harbaugh Bowl in SB XLVII. In a Hall of Fame career, that was the only SB appearance for Reed.

Kenny Phillips was part of the great tradition of safeties at Miami. Phillips had six tackles and two pass breakups as the Giants upset New England 21-17 for the second time in the Superbowl. The Giants defense held Tom Brady and the Patriots offense to 349 yards. New York intercepted Tom Brady once.

Miami has had legendary players and performances in the Superbowl. Those have been missing in more recent seasons. Another player worth mentioning is Devin Hester. Hester returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a TD in SB XLI. That was part of a record-setting exhilarating season for Hester.
