The transfer of Miami Hurricanes tight end Larry Hodges was inevitable with the depth at the position. Multiple media outlets reported the decision by Hodges to transfer. The decision by Hodges to transfer leaves Miami with five TEs on the roster entering 2022 that will include incoming freshman Jaleel Skinner.

Hodges played in 15 career games with Miami with three receptions for one yard and two touchdowns. Both of the career touchdowns for Hodges came as a true freshman in 2019 against Bethune-Cookman. Hodges signed with Miami in 2019 as the 587th ranked player, 26th TE and  73rd in Florida.

The departure of Hodges leaves Miami with returning starter Will Mallory and backups, 2021 signee Elijah Arroyo, 2022 signee Skinner and 2021 signee Khalil Brantley and 2020 signee Dominic Mammerelli. Mallory led Miami with 30 receptions for 347 yards and four touchdowns last season.

Arroyo had five receptions for 86 yards and one TD. Brantley had one reception for seven yards. Mammerelli has primarily been used on special teams throughout his career with no receptions, but one fumble recovers. Mallory, Arroyo and Skinner will likely be the primary TEs for Miami in 2022.

Hodges had 88 receptions for 1,145 yards and 10 touchdowns and 592 rushing yards and 11 TDs for Tampa Jesuit High School. Miami was able to sign Hodges over nine other programs including ACC rivals Louisville, North Carolina and Virginia Tech. There is no indication which programs Hodges is considering as a transfer.

Hodges will have three seasons of eligibility remaining at his new destination. As a true freshman in 2019, Hodges redshirted. Hodges maintained his eligibility after the 2020 season with all athletes granted an extra season due to covid. The 2021 season was technically Hodges’ freshman season.
