The Miami football program could pursue West Virginia transfer cornerback Darryl Porter Jr. Porter is an alum of American Heritage and was recruited to West Virginia by new Miami CBs coach Jahmile Addae. Porter announced his transfer on Wednesday. Porter Jr. was a three-star signee with West Virginia in the Class of 2020.

After receiving limited snaps as a freshman in 2020, Porter Jr. had 46 tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and five pass breakups in 2021. Pro Football Focus named Porter Jr. honorable mention All-Big XII in 2021. Porter attended Junior Day at Miami in 2019. Porter is the son of former NFL linebacker Darryl Porter Sr.

Marvin Jones Jr. who signed with Georgia in the Class of 2022 who Miami hired Addae from is the half-brother of Porter Jr. Miami added Tyrique Stevenson as a transfer from Georgia during the 2021 offseason. The Hurricanes signed four-star CBs Chris Graves and Khamauri Rogers and three-star Jaden Harris for 2022.

EerSports, the 247 Sports West Virginia site reported on Wednesday that Porter Jr. has not yet officially entered the transfer portal. Miami needs to add experienced depth at CB. After receiving the extra year of eligibility granted to all college athletes in 2020-21, Porter Jr. will have three years of eligibility remaining.

In addition to Stevenson, Miami returns Al Blades Jr, Marcus Clarke, Te’Cory Couch, Malik Curtis and D.J. Ivey at CB. Clarke started most of last season with Stevenson. Blades, Couch and Ivey have all been starters in the past. Miami needs to continue adding depth and experience to its roster.

Porter was a starter for West Virginia in 2021. Adding his experience to the six returning CBs Miami has on its roster would allow Addae and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to develop Graves, Harris and Rogers without having to rely on them in 2022. Porter would be a good addition to the Miami football roster.
