Miami baseball starts 2022 season versus Towson this weekend
The Miami baseball team returns 15 players from their 2021 team that finished 33-21. Miami signed the top-ranked recruiting class in the country according to Baseball America. The Hurricanes earned their 47th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021. Miami was eliminated in three games at the Gainesville Regional.
Pitcher Carson Palmquist leads the Hurricanes returnees in 2022. Palmquist was an All-American as a closer in 2021. In 2022, Palmquist will begin the 2022 season as the second starter for Miami. Palmquist had 14 saves in 25 appearances with a 2.22 ERA in 2021 and 75 strikeouts in 44.2 innings.
Infielder Yohnady Morales is also a 2022 preseason All-American for Miami. Morales hit .284 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs in 2021. Five of the projected 10 position starters play significantly in 2021. Sophomore starting pitcher Alejandro Rosario will start the season opener on Friday against Towson State at 7 PM.
Rosario was 6-4 with a 5.21 ERA in 2021. Nick Janowicz who was 3-3 with a 5.94 ERA in 2021 will start game one for Towson. Towson finished 21-36 in 2021. Miami swept a three-game series against Towson in 2020 outscoring the Tigers 19-4. Miami will begin ACC play March 12 versus Boston College.

Miami will host Florida Atlantic on Wednesday in its only weekday game the first week of the 2022 season. Other players to watch for Miami in 2022 include first baseman C.J. Kayfus, shortstop Dominic Pitelli, outfielder Jacob Burke and catcher Carlos Perez who is a transfer from Vanderbilt.
Perez played in the College World Series with the Commodores last season. Maxwell Romero and Perez are expected to split catcher in 2021. Morales and Romero were named to the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award watch list. Romero hit .300 with four HRs and 14 RBIs in 50 at-bats in 2021.
