The Miami baseball team swept a four-game series against Towson to begin the 2022 season. Miami outscored Towson 45-13 in the four-game series. The Hurricanes began the weekend with a 10-8 victory over the Tigers on Friday night. Miami won 11-2 and 13-2 in a doubleheader on Saturday. and 11-1 on Sunday.
The top of the order was the most productive for Miami. First baseman C.J. Kayfus who hit leadoff was seven for 15 with eight runs scored and seven RBIs. Shortstop Dominic Pitelli had six hits in 17 at-bats with four runs scored and six RBIs. Rightfielder Lorenzo Carrier was seven for 14 with five runs scored and nine RBIs.
In the opening game on Friday night, Miami trailed six to four after the fourth inning. Miami scored one in the fifth and five in the sixth to take the lead and went on to 10 to eight victory. Miami only trailed for two half innings the rest of the weekend. Towson led 1-0 after 2.5 innings in game two Saturday and a half-inning on Sunday.
After a shaky start from Alejandro Rosario on Friday night, the Miami pitching staff mostly shut down Towson the remainder of the weekend. Rosario pitched five innings allowing six runs, five earned with one walk and six strikeouts. Miami moved 2021 All-American closer Carson Palmquist to the 2022 rotation.
Andrew Walters is replacing Palmquist as the Hurricanes closer. Walters shut down Towson with four strikeouts, no hits or walks in 1.2 innings for the save in the season opener. Palmquist allowed one run on one hit with three walks and seven strikeouts in his first start to earn the victory.
Jake Garland started game three of the series for Miami allowing four hits, two unearned runs while striking out eight in six innings to earn his first victory of 2022. Alex McFarlane pitched five innings allowing two hits with one unearned run, one walk and six strikeouts for the victory.
The Miami baseball team is off until Wednesday when they host Florida Atlantic at 6:00 PM. Miami will host Harvard in a three-game series next week. The Hurricanes host Florida for three games in two weeks. Miami will begin ACC play on March 11 against Boston College. The Hurricanes are currently ranked 25th.
