The Miami football program is competing with at least six other Power Five programs for highly recruited junior college wide receiver Malik Benson. Auburn, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Tennessee are among the other Power Five programs interested. Several Group of Five programs are also recruiting Benson.

Benson had 43 receptions for 1,229 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns as a freshman at Hutchinson Community College in 2021. In his career at Lansing, Kansas High School, Benson had 62 receptions for 1,119 yards and 11 TDs. Programs are recruiting Benson because of his elite speed.

On3.Com reported that Benson runs a 10.44 100 meter dash. Benson also provides good size at 6’1, 170 pounds. A versatile athlete, Benson runs track and has participated in the long jump. If Miami can sign Benson he become the third WR added to the Miami football roster entering the 2022 season.

Miami signed four-star WR Isaiah Horton and added Clemson transfer, Frank Ladson. Miami has signed five transfers for 2022, including Ladson. The Hurricanes lost 2021 leading receivers, Charleston Rambo and Mike Harley. The coaches at Hutchinson expect Benson to continue receiving more offers.

Benson has been a big play WR throughout his high school and junior college careers. After his 2021 season, Benson received national attention and was named first-team All-American. Miami and most Power Five programs have not added as many JUCO transfers in recent years with the portal now being available.

Benson would add depth and potentially be a big-play WR for new offensive coordinator and WRs coach Josh Gattis. With Harley and Rambo moving on to the NFL, spring practice will be a time for Gattis to audition who will be the Hurricanes’ big play WR in 2022. Benson would not potentially enroll at Miami until after spring practice.
