Pro Football Hall of Famer and Miami Dolphins legend Jason Taylor is in negotiations to join the Miami football staff in what would likely be as an analyst or consultant. Taylor has been the defensive coordinator at powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas since 2020. Taylor was previously the Raiders’ defensive line coach.

Taylor has not previously coached in college. Hiring Taylor as an analyst or consultant would be a good first job for him on a college staff. Taylor could potentially be the second Pro Football Hall of Famer on the Miami staff. Ed Reed was the chief of staff on the previous Miami football staff.

Taylor has two sons currently playing college football Isaiah is a safety at Arizona and Mason plays tight end for LSU. If Miami hires Taylor he would continue adding to the all-star staff being assembled by head coach Mario Cristobal. Taylor would presumably work under defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

Steele and Taylor would give Miami two defensive assistants with NFL experience. Steele was the linebackers coach for the Carolina Panthers from 1995 through 1998. Taylor was selected in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Dolphins. Taylor had a sack in a 13-9 Miami victory over Carolina in 1998.

Cristobal has one or two more coaches he can fill on the Miami football staff. Stephen Field will likely remain the Miami TEs coach. Miami cornerbacks coach DeMarcus Van Dyke is expected to be reassigned to another position in the Miami football program. Miami is expected to hire one more defensive coach.

A defensive end coach has been discussed per reports. Joe Salave’a who played 12 years in the NFL is current the Miami defensive line coach. Salave’a was a defensive tackle. Salave’a and Taylor would provide Miami with NFL experience as staff for the Hurricanes DL. Taylor would not recruit off-campus or be an onfield coach.
