Miami baseball blownout in last two games losing series to Florida
After the Miami baseball team won the opening game of the series on Friday night the Hurricanes were blown out by Florida on Saturday and Sunday to lose the series to the Gators. Miami won the opener 5-2. Florida took the series with an 8-1 victory on Saturday and 11-3 win on Sunday. The Hurricanes are 8-3 after the weekend.
Carson Palmquist led Miami to the victory on Friday pitching five innings allowing three hits, three walks with six strikeouts and no runs. Miami took the lead in the fourth on a two-run Yohandy Morales home-run that also scored Jacob Burke. Morales doubled Burke home in the fourth that extended the Miami lead to 4-0.
After Florida scored two in the top of the seventh, Burke grounded into a fielders choice for the fifth Hurricanes run of the night. Miami had scored its third run of the game on a fielders choice. The Miami bullpen did enough to keep the Hurricanes ahead and earn their third win in the last four games against Florida.
Miami kept the score close until the ninth inning on Saturday behind an excellent start from freshman Karson Ligon. Ligon pitched seven innings, allowing three hits, three runs, one earned with one walk and eight strikeouts. Florida scored one in the first inning and two in the third to lead 3-0.
The Gators scored its first run on a wild pitch. After Colby Halter reached base on a dropped third strike with two outs in the third inning, Jud Fabian hit a two-run home run to stretch the Florida lead to 3-0. That was all the scoring in the game until the ninth inning. Florida erupted for five runs off three Miami relievers in the ninth inning.
Florida scored three runs with the first four batters in the top of the first inning on Sunday. The Gators added one in the third, three in the sixth, one in the eighth and three in the ninth to continue the pressure throughout the afternoon against Miami. The Hurricanes had one in the third and two in the ninth.
C.J. Kayfus had two hits in three at bats with an RBI on Sunday. Jake Garland had hit first poor start of the season for Miami. Garland allowed five hits, four runs, all earned, with one walk and one strike out in 2.1 innings. Nine pitchers relieved Garland allowing seven runs in 7.1 innings. Miami next hosts FIU on Tuesday.
The Miami baseball team will begin ACC play next weekend when they host Boston College next weekend. Hosting Boston College will conclude a 15 game homestand for Miami to begin the 2022 season. The Hurricanes will likely drop out of the top 25 from being ranked 22nd after the series loss to Florida.
