Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke has remained humble after Miami head coach Mario Cristobal called him the best signal-caller in college football. Cristobal made the comment when he was hired as the Miami head coach in December. Van Dyke had a breakout 2021 season as a second-year freshman.

In 10 games last season Tyler Van Dyke completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions. Those ten games included one pass attempt and three carries for 17 yards against Alabama. Van Dyke became the starting QB in 2021 when D’Eriq King suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

The competition to be the backup QB between true freshman Jake Garcia and Tyler Van Dyke was considered even early last season. Garcia suffered his own season-ending ankle injury against Central Connecticut State. Van Dyke had to lead the Miami offense with Peyton Matocha the only other scholarship QB on the roster.

Garcia and Van Dyke each spoke to the media after the first Spring Practice on Monday. Van Dyke appreciated the confidence that Cristobal has in him and three times stated the need to keep working to remain one of the best QBs in the country in 2021. Van Dyke will play under new offensive coordinator Josh Gattis.

"“Obviously it makes you feel like you’re one of the best. But at the same time, you have to keep going to work. Can’t let that get to your head and get big headed. You have to keep working. If you just stay at the top and think you’re going to be at the top, it’s not going to work. You have to keep working.”"

After King was injured Van Dyke showed the ability to be a leader and help set the culture for the Miami offense on the field and the entire team in the locker room. Van Dyke will be the face of the Miami football program in 2022. The expectation should be for Van Dyke to be on the list for Heisman Trophy favorites.

Miami will evolve offensively with Gattis and Van Dyke in 2022. Miami will strive to have a more balanced offense in 2022. Too often in 2021, Miami had to rely on the right arm of Van Dyke to pull out wins in high-scoring games. Van Dyke also lost his top two receivers from 2021, Mike Harley and Charleston Rambo.

The Hurricanes return enough playmakers throughout the offense for Van Dyke to continue to post big numbers. Van Dyke will have two marquee games in 2022 to make a statement nationally. Miami plays at Texas A&M on September 17 and Clemson on November 19.
