The Miami football program announced on Thursday morning Mario Cristobal is hosting a coaching clinic featuring National Championship and Superbowl winning coaches. Jimmy Johnson who won a National Championship at Miami in 1987 and two Superbowls with the Dallas Cowboys highlights the participating coaches.
Former Miami assistant and 2019 National Championship winner LSU head coach Ed Orgeron, head coach Sean McVay who just led the Los Angeles Rams to a Superbowl title and former Dolphins and current New Orleans Saints special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi are participating in the clinic.
Orgeron was the Miami defensive line coach from 1988 through 1992. The first season Orgeron was on the Miami staff was the last year Johnson was at Miami before leaving for Dallas. McVay was the youngest coach in the NFL when he was hired by the Rams in 2017 at 31 years old. McVay has led the Rams to two NFC titles.
Rizzi was the Dolphins Special Teams Coordinator from 2010 through 2018. Prior to beginning his career in the NFL, Rizzi spent 16 years as a college assistant. Mario Cristobal worked with Rizzi on the staff at Rutgers under former Hurricanes defensive coordinator Greg Schiano in 2002 and 2003.
After five years as the special teams coordinator at Rutgers, Rizzi was 3-9 as the head coach at FCS Rhode Island in 2008. Before Rutgers, Rizzi was the head coach at Division II New Haven from 1999 through 2001. Rizzi was 15-14 in three seasons at New Haven. Rizzi has been the associate head coach with the Dolphins and Saints.
The Miami football program brand name with Cristobal’s connections throughout the coaching profession these clinics will become more common for the Hurricanes. The clinic website states that the program will include Miami coaches and guest speakers position-specific drill instruction, a weight room presentation and food.
Miami is charging $50 for the clinic. Payment for the clinic can be made through cash or credit card next Friday afternoon per the Mario Cristobal Camps website. Cristobal is quickly making his presence felt in Coral Gables. Cristobal as the head coach of the Miami football program seems like a corporate merger.
