After scoring 43 points leading the Miami Hurricanes to the regional semifinals for the first time since 2016, guard Isaiah Wong was named first-team All-NCAA Tournament through the first two rounds by CBS Sports on Monday afternoon. Wong is on pace to be named to the Midwest All-region team.
In addition to his 43 points, Wong has 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and only one turnover through the first two Miami Hurricanes NCAA Tournament games. Wong has led Miami in scoring in each of the first two games. Miami leading scoring Kameron McGusty is averaging 16 points per game in the NCAA Tournament.
McGusty is averaging 17.3 PPG during the regular season. Wong made sure Miami got off to a good start against USC. Against the Trojans, Wong scored the first 13 points of the game for Miami and the initial nine of the second half to account for all 22 of his points in the Hurricanes’ win.
Wong has been efficient through his first two games. Kyle Boone of CBS Sports profiled the “2022 NCAA Tournament: Honoring the standout players from the first two rounds of March Madness.” Wong set the table versus USC to set up the heroics from Charlie Moore making the winning free throws with three seconds left.
"First team“Isaiah Wong, Miami: Miami’s two tournament wins thus far have both come with the Hurricanes in an underdog role with Wong leading the way.Wong scored 22 points in its first-round win over USC before fouling out, then followed it up with 21 points and six rebounds in a Sunday stunner as the No. 10 seed Hurricanes bounced No. 2 seed Auburn. He has yet to make a 3-pointer in the tournament (0 of 3), but he’s 15 of 30 shooting from the floor and nearly perfect — 13 of 14 — from the free throw line.”"
Moore, McGusty and Wong have led Miami in different games this season. McGusty scored 20 against Auburn to be one behind Wong as the Miami leading scoring. The ACC named McGusty first-team All-Conference in 2021-22 and Wong was third team. Jim Larranaga calls Moore the Chris Paul of the Miami basketball team.
Wong is not alone in the three-point struggles for the Miami basketball team. The Hurricanes have made five of their 29 three-point attempts in their NCAA Tournament wins. Miami is shooting 45.9 percent from the floor in the NCAA Tournament. On two-point attempts, Miami is shooting 54.8 percent on two-point shots in the NCAA Tournament.
