The remainder of the Miami Hurricanes tight ends will receive more snaps with the announcement on Thursday that Will Mallory will miss the rest of spring football with a shoulder injury. Miami is extremely talented but mostly inexperienced at TE behind Mallory. Mallory left practice Tuesday with his arm in a sling.
This is the second spring in a row Mallory will be out with a shoulder injury. Mallory missed all of 2021 spring practice recovering from shoulder surgery. The absence of Mallory will provide Miami TEs Elijah Arroyo, Kahlil Brantley, Dominic Mammarelli and true freshman Jaleel Skinner more snaps this spring.
Arroyo who had five receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown as a true freshman in 2021, is expected to be the first-team TE for the remainder of spring practice. Skinner has a high ceiling for the Miami Hurricanes after flipping his commitment from Alabama in January. Brantley offers depth as a skilled pass catcher.
Mammarelli is strong blocker who adds depth. Mallory is returning to Miami for a fifth season taking advantage of the extra year provided all athletes who competed during the 2020-21 school year. In 2021, Mallory had career highs with 30 receptions for 347 yards, and tied matched his best with four touchdowns.
Malloy is second among the Miami returnees in receptioons, third in receiving yards and first in touchdowns. The skill level that Miami has at TE with Arroyo, Mallory and Skinner provide new Hurricanes’ offensive coordinator Josh Gattis with multiple options and formations. The young TEs getting more snaps should help Gattis.
Mallory has proven his abilities and skills with four years of video. The other Miami TEs have little to no college video. The next three weeks leading up to the Spring Game on April 16 at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale will provide Gattis with a chance to evaluate the TE position for Miami heading into the summer.
