Miami basketball advances to first ever Elite Eight over Iowa State

The Miami basketball team led nearly the entire game and pulled away late in a 70-56 victory over Iowa State on Friday night in Chicago to advance to the first Elite Eight in program history. Kameron McGusty led Miami with 27 points, Jordan Miller had 16 and seven rebounds and Sam Waardenburg had 13 and eight with five assists.

Iowa State was able to stay close throughout the first half and trailed 32-29 at halftime. McGusty led the way for Miami as Charlie Moore and Isaiah Wong were scoreless in the opening 20 minutes. Miami continued to force turnovers with Iowa State committing 18. The Hurricanes committed 14 turnovers.

McGusty, Miller and Waardenburgh were the only Miami players to score in the first half. Moore and Wong combined for 12 points on five out of 19 from the field. After three turnovers early, Moore was clean the rest of the night and controlled the tempo with nine assists. Miami’s experience made a difference.

McGusty, Moore and Waardenburg are all in their sixth season in college. Miami was saved McGusty all night in an efficient performance. McGusty shot 10-18 from the field, made four of his seven three-point attempts and three of four from the free-throw line. Miller made all six of his shots on Friday night.

The Miami basketball team used a 7-0 run early in the second half to push the lead to eight and led by at least five the remainder of the game. The Hurricanes closed the game 21-12 to put Iowa State away. Miami outscored Iowa State 38 to 27 in the second half. The Hurricanes outscored Auburn 46 to 29 in the second round.

Miami has been a second-half team often this season with several double-digit comebacks. The Hurricanes have not needed a big comeback in the NCAA Tournament. Miami advances to play Kansas on Sunday at 2:20 PM. The 2021-22 season will go down as one of the best in Miami history.
