The Miami basketball team advanced to its first NCAA Tournament Regional Final on Friday night with a 70-56 win over Iowa State. Miami seeks to better that accomplishment when they play another Big XII team, Midwest Region top seed Kansas on Sunday afternoon at the United Center in Chicago.

Kansas advanced with a 66-61 win over Providence in the first Midwest Regional semifinal on Friday night. Miami lost to Dayton in the first round of the ESPN Events Invitational in November a game ahead of a potential game against Kansas. Dayton defeated Miami, Kansas and Iona in winning the tournament title.

Miami lost 76-70 to Dayton in the ESPN Events Invitation quarterfinals. The Flyers defeated the Jayhawks 74-73 in the semifinals. Kansas defeated North Texas 71-59 in the quarterfinals. Miami defeated North Texas 69-63 in the consolation semifinals. The only other common opponent for Kansas and Miami is Iowa State.

Kansas swept the two games they played with Iowa State this season. The Jayhawks won 62-61 in Lawrence and 70-61 in Ames. Kansas and Miami are playing for just the third time. The Hurricanes and Jayhawks last played in 1991. This is the first game this season for Kansas against an ACC team.

Iowa State reached the Sweet 16 under T.J. Otzelberger who finished his first season as the head coach with the Cyclones. On Sunday, Jim Larranaga will match up against Kansas and Naismith Hall of Fame head coach Bill Self. Larranaga has routinely proven he can coach will the elite in college basketball.
