Brad Crawford of 247 Sports is high on the Miami football team as one of the teams he analyzes in his article “College football temperatures: Top 25 teams to buy or sell in 2022.” Miami enters the 2022 season with renewed optimism entering their inaugural season under Mario Cristobal.
The Miami football team was 7-5 in 2021 in the last season under Manny Diaz. Miami returns 14 starters in 2022. Cristobal was 10-3 in his final season at Oregon. The Ducks were 35-13 in four-plus seasons under Cristobal. Miami upgraded the talent on its roster signing the 15th best class and adding seven transfers.
The return of quarterback Tyler Van Dyke and former five-star signees, defensive tackle Leonard Taylor and safety James Williams to anchor the defense provide Cristobal with a good foundation for 2022. Cristobal has been praised for the staff he hired. Miami has a good mix of experience and rising young coaches.
Cristobal led Oregon to two New Year’s Six Bowl games in four seasons as head coach. The 2017 Orange Bowl is the only New Year’s Six appearance for Miami since entering the ACC in 2004. Under Cristobal, ACC Coastal Divison Titles and New Year’s Six Bowl appearances will be expected to become the norm.
"MIAMI HURRICANES: BUY“If you’re looking for a team to get to the New Year’s Six outside of the top 15, Miami is the pick. And you could make the argument that Mario Cristobal is in the best win-now situation among major Power Five hires this cycle given two factors — the Hurricanes’ weak division and a favorable schedule. There are teams more talented than Miami with first-year head coaches, but they don’t have the same contributing factors that may result in a banner campaign. Cristobal brings with him a 35-13 record over four-plus seasons at Oregon. He’ll have to rebuild Miami to an extent, as the Hurricanes went 7-5 in 2021 and won just 58% of their games under previous head coach Manny Diaz. He’s got Tyler Van Dyke at quarterback as well.”"
The Miami football team has been named in some of the early preseason rankings. Expect the Hurricanes to receive a lot of preseason buzz as the season gets closer. Cristobal is one of four first-year head coaches in the ACC. Duke, Virginia and Virginia and Virginia Tech all have coaches in their inaugural season as a head coach.
Pittsburgh with head coach Pat Narduzzi entering his eighth season as head coach are the defending ACC Champions. From 2013 through 2019 each Coastal Division team each won a title. Miami has an excellent chance for their second ever Coastal Division title and first since 2017 with Cristobal as the head coach.
