In stating “One question each ACC team must answer during spring practices ahead of 2022 college football season.” Chip Patterson of CBS Sports asked about MiamiWhat is Josh Gattis’ plan for Tyler Van Dyke and the offense?. Gattis has quickly developed a rapport with Van Dyke as the new Miami offensive coordinator.

Under Rhett Lashlee who is now the head coach at SMU, the Miami offense with Tyler Van Dyke to 23rd nationally in scoring at 34.1 points per game and 20th in total offense averaging 448.8 total yards per game. Gattis led Michigan to the 16th best scoring offense in 2021 averaging 35.8 PPG and 24th averaging 443.1 YPG.

Miami is expected to have a more balanced offense in 2022. The Hurricanes were 10th averaging 321.2 passing yards per game in 2021. Michigan was 68th averaging 228.7 passing yards per game in 2022. Miami was 97th averaging 127.67 rushing yards per game. Michigan was 15th at 214.36 rushing yards per game.

Three covid sophomores, running back Jaylan Knighton and wide receivers Xavier Restrepo and Keyshawn Smith played key roles for Miami last season. Knighton carried the workload for Miami on the ground after Don Chaney Jr. and Cam’Ron Harris were lost for the season. Restrepo and Smith will have bigger roles in 2022.

"Miami“What is Josh Gattis’ plan for Tyler Van Dyke and the offense?: When D’Eriq King was shut down last year due to injury, Van Dyke — then a freshman — emerged as one of the best quarterbacks in the league.New coach Mario Cristobal inherits a good situation with not only Van Dyke, but a handful of other freshmen who saw significant playing time last season. Now, it’s time to turn the attention to how that young core can be the foundation of an ACC championship-winning program.Cristobal hit a home run by luring offensive coordinator Josh Gattis away from Michigan. Gattis has been targeted as a coach on the rise since his time as an Alabama assistant, and last year he was named the Broyles Award winner for his work in the Wolverines’ College Football Playoff run.How Gattis decides to blend the tools from an offense that moved with pace to a scheme that he and Cristobal want to put in place at Miami will determine how successful Van Dyke, the reigning ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year, will be in 2022.”"

Miami has the talent to be successful offensively. True sophomores Romello Brinson, Jacolby George and Brashard Smith showed promise in limited playing time last season at WR. The difference with Cristobal as head coach and Gattis as the new offensive coordinator is that Miami is expected to be more physical.

A bigger question Miami must answer other than the Gattis plan for Tyler Van Dyke and the offense is what can new co-defensive coordinators Kevin Steele and Charlie Strong do to improve the play at linebacker this fall. We know what the Miami offense can do. The Hurricanes need significant improvement defensively in 2022.
