Where should Miami football at Texas AM rank among 2022 non-conference games?
The Miami football team at Texas A&M on September 17 will be one of the marquee 2022 non-conference games. It could have College Football Playoff implications for both teams depending on how the season turns out. Miami will be closely watched in its first season under Mario Cristobal and Texas A&M has high 2022 expectations.
Miami at Texas A&M is one of two games on the 2022 Hurricanes’ schedule that will receive national attention. At Clemson on November 19 is the other Miami game that could receive a trip from ESPN College Gameday. There will be a lot of questions ahead of the Aggies and Hurricanes’ third game of the 2022 season.
The Miami football team opens on September 3 hosting FCS Bethune-Cookman and Southern Mississippi will be at Hard Rock Stadium a week later. The Aggies begin their season at home against Sam Houston State who won the Spring 2021 FCS Championship and hosts Appalachian State in week two.
Miami and Texas A&M will be prohibitive favorites in their first two games and be expected to enter their matchup undefeated. Mike Huguenin of On3.Com ranked Miami at Texas A&M as the ninth best non-conference game of the 2022 season. Miami at Texas A&M will be one of the biggest games week three.
"9. Miami at Texas A&M, September 17“The buzz: Once again, a lot is expected of Texas A&M. Will the Aggies live up to the hype this season? A lot depends on the quarterback, whether it’s Haynes King or LSU transfer Max Johnson. Speaking of quarterbacks, Miami will have the best one in this game in Tyler Van Dyke. Can the Hurricanes keep him protected?Miami’s best chance would seem to be winning a shootout. This also is an interesting coaching matchup with A&M’s Jimbo Fisher and new UM head man Mario Cristobal.”"
Johnson and Van Dyke will be interesting to watch at QB. Former Miami coach and QB Mark Richt will have a particular interest watching his alma mater play against his nephew through marriage, Johnson. Johnson threw for 2,815 yards, 27 touchdowns and six interceptions starting for LSU in 2021.
Van Dyke threw for 2,931 yards, 25 TDs and six interceptions for Miami. The game between the Aggies and the Hurricanes could be decided by which of the veteran signal callers plays better. Texas A&M has a lot of pressure on them entering the 2022 season with the top ranked signing class.
A win by the Miami football team would make a statement early in the tenure of Mario Cristobal. Playing at Texas A&M only three games into the Cristobal era is a difficult challenge for Miami. Cristobal has demanded physicality and toughness. Playing the Aggies on the road week three is a good barometer for Cristobal and Miami.
